Entry #7 #WakeUp
It seems that with the age of the hashtag, the word hashtag itself has become some sort of form of expression. I mean I'm not sure if people are using it as a joke or not, but when you hear someone say "Hashtag, "I hate my life" Hashtag, "OMG", Hashtag, "why." I question what exactly a hashtag really is.
I've been on twitter since high school, and it seems that these hashtags are in and out of trending every couple of days. Each hashtag is like a new thread of a joke, or a scandal, an advertisement, or even a movement.
Jimmy Fallen has popularized one of the ways the hashtag is used. He'll ask his audience on his personal twitter page to tweet out a response to various hashtags. If you're tweet is funny enough, you have a chance of making it onto his show. Its made people use hashtags in a light hearted kind of way, Using it for jokes instead bashing people.
These hashtags can become scandals that can ruin careers. It can run like wild fire where it only takes a few people to have one opinion, then have the whole world back them up. Similar hashtags like "ShaneDawsonisOverParty" and "TaylorSwiftisOverParty" are hashtags created only for the use of straying people away from liking these creators. The internet is a place that can dig up the deepest secrets of celebrities and through the use of a hashtag, these secrets can come out. Threads like these, can be used for both good and evil, bringing people together likewise for either side.
In recent years, the hashtag has become a symbol of power. Movements like Black Lives Matter and TimusUp, this hashtag has become a place where people without power can use their language to make a change through the medium of twitter. It gives a voice to those who previously may have been silenced and it is a tool that allows us to do as such. It has layers to the way that it has changed our society.

Whether a movement or a joke, hashtag's aren't only used by the general public, but by companies as well. It's sort of this free advertisement page that people actually follow and love. Coca Cola said that their ad "ShareACoke" finally pushed them across the line into a profit increase which they hadn't seen for years.
This hashtag has sort of become a revolution. It gives a major access for people with similar thoughts and opinion to come together and share. It doesn't matter if you have a million followers or 1, if you send a tweet with a hashtag, everyone on that hashtag thread will see your tweet. In this world of instant connections, a hashtag can make it easier to be around people like you and maybe together can stand up against what's wrong in the world like rapists, corrupt cops, and even political leaders. I can only wonder the amount of people a hashtag can reach and the changes that it can make.
