Entry #4 Something to Think About
"There may be a great fire in our soul, but no one ever comes to warm himself by it, all that passers-by can see is a little smoke coming out of the chimney, and they walk on." - Vincent Van Gogh
When was the last time that you stopped and thought about the people that are around you? An abundance of relationships, history, experiences, and beauty surround you at every second. Van Gogh understood this and felt this with every part of his being. He knew that every interaction you have is only a minuscule part of another's life. You see only a glimpse of their soul and the sad part is, is that nobody will stop and listen.
Van Gogh takes this feeling and puts it out onto canvas for us to fathom. His favorite thing to paint are people because they are the result of these moments and essences fused together. He feels for strangers more than anyone else for he says that, "There’s nothing more genuinely artistic than to love people." He paints the stars to mean hope for these people. That for every sadness there is a star to look up to.
As Van Gogh dealt with manic depression for most of his life, painting these glimpses of hope meant everything to him.
With every person, there is a story. There is a person who wants to share their experiences and feels pain just as much as the other. There will be no one to stop by your fire, but you're a flame and you have to see the light; the hope.
